A Letter for Families

Dear families,

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to Gumnut Music! You're about to embark on a magical musical journey with your little one, and we couldn't be more excited to share this experience with you.

What makes Gumnut Music special?

Unlike many children's music programs, we don't use pre-recorded playlists or backing tracks. Every note you hear is played live—on ukulele, percussion instruments, ocean drums, bells, and more. We bring real musical skill, pedagogical expertise, and genuine joy to every session.

We do this so we can showcase how music is constructed and because it reflects our three core values: Connection, Collaboration, and Child-Led learning. This means we follow your child's lead, honor their ideas, and create musical stories together. Your child's voice matters here.

Here's what we ask of you:

Jump in with us! Sing loudly. Dance freely. Be silly. Embrace the magic of play.

We know that for some, play may feel uncomfortable and vulnerable at first. Many of us spend our days in professional, serious adult environments. Letting loose and being playful may no longer come naturally.

But here's the truth: Your child is watching you. When you participate fully, even if you feel silly, you're showing them that it's safe to be creative, expressive, and joyful. You’re showing them you’re here to have fun with them and nothing makes a child feel more seen or valuable than a grown-up who wants to play!

The more you put in, the more your child gets out of each class.

And we promise: no one here is judging you. We’re all too busy enjoying the moment. This is a space where playfulness is celebrated, where off-key singing is encouraged, and where the only 'wrong' way to participate is not to participate at all.

What to expect:

Each class is themed: Under the Sea, Deep in the Jungle, Outta Space - and we use live music, storytelling, puppets, and props to bring these worlds to life. While we have a plan, we're flexible. If your child wants to spend extra time with the ocean drum or suggests we meet a friendly shark along the way, we'll follow their lead! Collaboration is why we use live music, so we can go with the flow.

Every child participates differently, and that's beautiful. Some jump right in. Others observe quietly. Both are valuable forms of engagement, and we honor them equally.

And remember, even the most quiet child is learning. Trust that they’re observing the content and will practice and master it in their own time in a way and space that feels comfortable for them.

Practical details:

What to bring: Just yourselves! We provide all instruments and resources. Optional: water bottles. It is recommended you leave toys at home. They can be a distraction to your child and the other children around them.

Ages: Our family classes are designed for children aged 0-5 years (siblings welcome too). Children learn from each other and we believe in families making music as a unit, not in segregated age groups.
