What Makes Music with Shannalee Different?

Shannalee uses the multi-award winning Gumnut Music curriculum. Each class features:

  • 100% live music: Every note is played live on ukulele and instruments. No backing tracks. This lets us respond to what's happening in the room.

  • Child-led: Children help shape the story by adding their own unique ideas, actions and sounds into the learning and play.

  • Pedagogically grounded: Based on Orff and Kodaly principles—research-backed approaches used worldwide.

  • Quality instruments: We use real instruments with beautiful timbres, not cheap plastic toys.

  • Musical storytelling: Themed adventures that weave together music, movement, and imagination. This deepens the learning for the children and makes it more meaningful to their world.

Classes run 30 minutes each week and are scheduled back-to-back.

Terms & Conditions

  • Safety- Safety is important to us, and we will take necessary precautions to ensure a fun and secure environment while enjoying the musical experience together! Families agree that while participating in Mini Music with Shannalee classes at any venue is at your family's own risk. Families acknowledge that Music with Shannalee is not liable for any injury or illness that may arise from attending.

Refunds/Cancellations- Life with little ones is unpredictable, and attending every class might not always be possible. While Music with Shannalee maintains a no-refund policy, if your child misses a session because of illness, you’re welcome to join any other class that week, pending space and availability.

Participation- Since this class is primarily for teaching healthy music learning practices to parents for music learning at home, parents must participate in all activities. Children often are unresponsive in class and engage more freely at home between classes. This is normal. Parents are encouraged to learn the activities during class time so they can share them with their children during more receptive times at home.

Phones- Phones must be left on silent or outside the learning space.

Siblings- Our family classes are designed for children aged 0-5 years (siblings welcome too).

Children learn from each other, and we believe in families making music as a unit, not in segregated age groups. We create an inclusive environment where babies can explore gentle sounds and textures, toddlers can move and groove, and preschoolers can engage with more complex musical concepts. Everyone participates at their own level!

Class Time- Enrolled children may roam the learning area during class as long as they do not divert other children’s attention. Occasionally invite a roaming child back to the group, but do not force the child to participate.

Kindness-Do not compare one child's accomplishments to another’s. Children develop at different rates. Later development is sometimes better! We will be encouraging to all in the studio.

Tuition- Tuition must be paid to ensure your spot in the class.

    Acceptance of Terms and Conditions
By enrolling and/or attending class, you agree to abide by these Terms and Conditions, along with the guidelines by our venues. These terms and conditions apply in all circumstances.

*Music with Shannalee’s studio policies are subject to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes! Your child is watching you. When you participate fully—even if you feel silly—you show them it's safe to be creative and joyful. The more you put in, the more your child gets out. No one is judging you—we're all too busy having fun!

  • Each class is a musical adventure! We use live singing, ukulele, high-quality instruments, puppets, props, and storytelling to create an immersive experience.

Unlike many children's music programs, we don't use pre-recorded playlists or backing tracks. Every note you hear is played live. We do this so we can showcase how music is constructed and because it reflects our three core values: Connection, Collaboration, and Child-Led learning.

    A typical session includes:

    • Welcome song

    • Themed musical storytelling (Under the Sea, Deep in the Jungle, Outta Space, etc.)

    • Instrument exploration and play

    • Creative movement and dance featuring fun resources

    • Songs, rhymes, and rhythm activities

    • Bubbles

  • Classes run for 30 minutes, which is just the right amount of time for young children to stay engaged and focused. This ensures they have a positive, enjoyable experience without becoming overwhelmed or overstimulated. A 30 minute class allows us to keep the activities fun, dynamic, and perfectly suited to their developmental needs.

  • That's completely okay and totally normal! Every child participates differently, and that's beautiful. Some jump right in. Others observe quietly. Both are valuable forms of engagement, and we honor them equally.

Remember: Even the most quiet child is learning. Trust that they're observing the content and will practice and master it in their own time, in a way and space that feels comfortable for them.

    What you can do:

    • Keep participating yourself—model engagement without pressuring your child

    • Sit close to your child so they feel safe and supported

    • Laugh, smile and have fun!

    • Avoid forcing them to join, instead model the behaviour you’d like to see.

    • Trust the process—observation is participation

  • Absolutely! Siblings are welcome, and our classes are perfect for children aged 0-5 years. We do ask that you book for each child over six months old. To keep the experience intimate and inclusive, class sizes are limited to 10 children, so all attendees require a ticket.

  • Just yourselves! We provide all instruments and resources. Optional: water bottles. Please leave toys and food at home.Item description

  • The best thing you can do is keep making music together! Here are some simple ideas:

    • Sing throughout the day—while getting dressed, in the car, at bath time

    • Create homemade instruments: shakers from rice in containers, drums from pots and wooden spoons

    • Dance together and turn everyday objects into movement resources

    • Explore the concepts and songs presented in class, you’ll uncover fun new ways to play and make them uniquely your own.

    • Play music from diverse cultures and genres

    • Most importantly: follow your child's lead and have fun!

Remember: Your voice is your child's favorite instrument. It doesn't matter if you sing in tune—what matters is that you sing together.

  • Yes, we understand life with little ones is unpredictable! Just enter/exit quietly and we'll welcome you with a smile.

  • We've all been there! Tantrums, meltdowns, and big feelings are part of early childhood.

    What we ask:

    • If your child needs space, take them to a quiet corner or outside briefly

    • Return when they're ready—we'll still be here making music

    • Know that we understand. No judgment, no pressure

Trust your instincts as a parent.

  • We have a no-refund policy. If your child is sick, you're welcome to attend another session that week (subject to availability).

  • I understand that committing to a full term can feel like a big decision, both in time and cost. That's why I offer drop in classes (subject to availability). Just book online, choose the day and date that work for you, and we'll see you in class!
